Helen B. Opel, 84, died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Welcome Nursing Home, Oberlin after a long illness. She was born on August 28, 1922 in Akron. She lived in Oberlin since 1943, coming from Parkersburg, WV.
Helen was a former member of East Oberlin Community Church and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Oberlin.
During WW II, she helped manufacture airplane parts for the war.
She was a receptionist for Gremore Dance Studios, Ross Lumber Co., and Oberlin Lumber Co.
Helen enjoyed country music, square dancing, playing cards, and baking cinnamon rolls.
She is survived by sons, John B. Opel, Prattsville, AL, George "Buddy" Opel, Oberlin; daughter, Susan J. Butz, Oberlin; sisters, Margie A. Grills, Bella Vista, AR, and Emily Leighton, Columbus; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Opel; parents, Russel C. and Julia W. (nee Poling) Baker; and sister, Doris E. Baker.
Visitation will be Friday, July 20, 2007, from 6 to 8 P.M. at the Cowling Funeral Home, 228 S. Main Street, Oberlin, where Funeral Services will be Saturday, July 21, 2007 at 11 A.M. Rev. Robert Hooker of First United Methodist Church of Oberlin will officiate. Interment will be at Westwood Cemetery.
