Bomb threat found in charter school
LORAIN - A bomb threat was discovered on the bathroom wall of a Broadway charter school Wednesday afternoon.
Teachers at Summit Academy Secondary found the message, written in pencil, about 1:15 p.m. and called 911. The school houses grades seven through 12 and specializes in teaching children with learning disorders.
Lorain police searched the school, as well as the Chase Bank that shares the brick building on the corner of Broadway and East 20th Street, but found nothing. No one was evacuated and both police and firefighters left the scene after about 30 minutes.
School Superintendent Kathy Mioni said she didn`t think the threat was valid, especially since students don`t bring book bags of any kind that could transport a bomb, but thought it appropriate to contact authorities anyway.
Boy cited after fight over shopping trip
LORAIN - A 12-year-old boy was cited with a juvenile count of domestic violence Tuesday after he punched his mother and grabbed the steering wheel to her moving car, according to a Lorain police report.
The boy was upset that his mother would not buy him an outfit during a shopping trip on Meister Road, the report said. His mother slammed on the brakes when the boy grabbed the wheel, and he jumped from the vehicle and ran off.
The boy was reported missing at 5:05 p.m. and was found about 2½ hours later at a Vardon Court home, the report said. He was taken to the county detention home.
Subject of threat found unharmed
LORAIN - Police sent to a Lorain home at noon Tuesday thought they might have a murder on their hands.
As it turns out, they didn`t.
It started when Michael Domines, 41, of Lorain started fighting with his roommate about drug use, police said. During the fight, which grew so heated that police were called, Domines apparently said he`d killed his girlfriend the night before, and he would kill the roommate, too, police said.
So police searched for the woman, but didn`t find her at her home in Sheffield or a friend`s house in Lorain. Finally, on Wednesday night, Sheffield police found Hamilton, who was unharmed.
Intruders demand money, burn woman
ELYRIA - Intruders burned a 22-year-old Elyria woman with an iron Tuesday after breaking into her apartment and demanding money that was owed to them.
Sarah Warner told Elyria police she had been ironing clothes about 2:30 p.m. in her Ridge Circle apartment when she heard a knock at her rear sliding glass door, according to the police report.
When Warner answered she was assaulted by an unknown black man in his late teens to early 20s. The man grabbed Warner by the neck and pushed her against a wall in another room, while an unknown female accomplice, described as Hispanic and in her late teens to early 20s, followed him inside.
The man asked Warner, “Where`s my money?” according to the report, and demanded she pay him $400.
Warner told police the female picked up the hot iron she had been using, held it to her face, and burned the lower right side of her neck, the report said.
Warner`s 2-year-old son stood nearby and witnessed the assault. Both suspects fled without taking anything.
Warner told police she suspected her boyfriend may have known the intruders, but she had never seen them before and didn`t know what money they were demanding.
Warner described the male as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black faded jeans and had a scarf or cloth partially covering the lower part of his face. The incident remains under investigation.
Man robs hotel staff at gunpoint
ELYRIA - A man holding a gun and wearing a ski mask Tuesday robbed the Country Inn and Suites on Griswold Road.
Employees at the hotel told police that a light-skinned black or Hispanic man walked into the lobby of the hotel shortly after 8 p.m. and demanded the cash from the register. The robber showed a black semiautomatic handgun and entered the office area where two employees were and began grabbing the money himself.
The robber forced the employees to enter another part of the office while he made his getaway, according to Elyria police Lt. Andy Eichenlaub. No one was hurt during the robbery, Eichenlaub said, but the robber made off with an undisclosed amount of money.
Employees described the man as wearing a tan, goose down jacket, dark jeans and tennis shoes. The robbery remains under investigation.
Thieves steal copper bricks from business
LORAIN - A burglar broke into National Bronze and Metal on Thanksgiving morning and stole $60,000 worth of copper bricks.
According to a county sheriff`s office report, the burglar gained access to the business at 5311 West River Road sometime during the early morning hours of Nov. 22 by cutting the entrance gate lock with an unknown cutting tool.
They stole a red cargo truck and drove to a northeast building containing various kinds of scrap metal, the report said.
After backing the stolen truck up to a loading dock, the burglar cut the padlock on a metal entrance door and used a tow motor on the premises to load the truck with six wooden pallets containing 20,000 pounds of copper bricks.
Once the truck was loaded, the door was closed and the burglar fled the business in an unknown direction, leaving the main door open behind them, the report said.
The sheriff`s office is investigating the incident.
