NEW YORK — A pile of dinosaur dung 130 million years old sold at a New York auction Wednesday for nearly $1,000.
The prehistoric deposit fetched $960, said a spokeswoman for Bonhams New York. Its pre-auction estimate was $450.
The fossilized dung is from the Jurassic era, the [...]
Ohio Senate cracks down on payday lending
COLUMBUS — One of the nation’s strictest proposed crackdowns on payday lending cleared the Ohio House Wednesday, backed by Republicans and Democrats who believed the protection of consumers would far outweigh job losses should the industry shut down.
The bill, which passed 68-26, slashes customer charges to a fraction of their current rates [...]
Home invasion foiled
LITHOPOLIS, Ohio — A teenager home alone pulled bed sheets over her head to hide from two intruders and sent a text message to her mother, whose 911 call led to the arrest of two suspects, authorities said Wednesday.
Lauren Durnbaugh, 13, didn’t go to school Tuesday and was home when she heard someone open [...]
Cavaliers: LeBron James keeps cool, stays out of fights
INDEPENDENCE — The Washington Wizards can talk all they want, knock his headband off and commit flagrant fouls. There is one thing Cavaliers small forward LeBron James vows he won’t do. “I don’t fight,” James said Tuesday following a workout at Cleveland Clinic Courts. “That’s so grade school. I don’t need to fight. [...]
Cavaliers commentary: LeBron’s right — Wizards are done
LeBron James has a way of saying a lot by saying almost nothing. So it was as James sat at the interview podium Sunday afternoon at the Verizon Center, about 45 minutes after passing to Delonte West for the game-winning 3-pointer in the Cavaliers’ 100-97 victory over the Washington Wizards in Game 4. [...]
Indians: Offense fails Tribe yet again in loss to Seattle
CLEVELAND — Nothing says anemic like the Indians offense these days. It also says pitiful, feeble, awful, dreadful and atrocious. Another night at Progressive Field brought another listless performance from Cleveland’s hitters, who flailed away at a different pitching staff Tuesday — Seattle’s — paving the way for a 7-2 loss. Coupled with [...]
Elyria Sports Hall of Fame: Jack Marsh learned the neighborhood way
Jack Marsh couldn’t have known it growing up on South Maple Street, a stone’s throw from Ely Stadium. Probably didn’t even think about it. All Marsh and his friends wanted to do was join a pickup game of basketball or football or knock the baseball around at the stadium — a typical day [...]
Tribe notes: Travis Hafner’s struggles carry over to 2008
CLEVELAND — The Indians survived a substandard 2007 season from Travis Hafner, and they’ve endured much the same at the start of this year. Though he says he feels different than he did last season, Hafner is producing similar results, entering the series opener with Seattle on Tuesday, batting just .219 (21-for-96) with three [...]
H.S. Baseball: Andrew Kubuski pitches EC past Brookside
LORAIN — You could say Andrew Kubuski has Brookside’s number this season. And it doesn’t look like he’s going to lose it. Kubuski, a sophomore lefty, held Brookside to two hits Tuesday afternoon at the Pipe Yard in Elyria Catholic’s easy 9-0 victory. It was Kubuski’s second win over the Cardinals this [...]
H.S. Girls Basketball: Jeff Keith hired as Brookside coach
SHEFFIELD — Longtime dreams do come true. Just ask Jeff Keith, who has been hired as the girls basketball coach at Brookside High School. “I’m really happy about becoming the head coach at a place I call home and am able to live out my biggest wish,” he said Tuesday. Keith, [...]
