Fire hydrant testing
City fire and utilities crews will conduct annual safety inspections of fire hydrants in Avon Lake during April and May. Water may be discolored during inspections but should clear up in a short time. Check water before washing clothes. To find out when crews will be in your area, call the Avon Lake fire department at (440) 933-8305.

Chamber golf outing
Think you’ve got a Tiger Woods swing? Then show it off June 6 at the North Coast Regional Chamber of Commerce 16th annual Golf Outing. The event at Sweetbriar Golf Club, 750 Jaycox Road, Avon Lake, is open to the public. This year will be played in a scramble format with a shotgun start on the new Legacy 18 course. Registration is required. Get forms at www.nortcoastchamber.com or by calling the chamber office at (440) 933-9311.Proceeds support the chamber and its scholarship program.

Drug abuse info
“Prescription Meds Abuse Epidemic Among Teens: What Should Parents Know?” will shed light on drug abuse at home and in schools. The free event is 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Avon High School and will be presented by counselor Rene Reinker and teacher Sherry Pietch. No child care will be provided. Avon sets recordsStudents at Avon Middle School set several records during the third grading quarter. Administrators were aiming to have daily attendance higher than 95 percent, and the students hit a quarterly record of  96 percent. The school also had an average of four tardy students per day, well under their goal of eight per day. They also said 56 percent of students landed on the honor rolls (the goal was 50 percent), failing grades totaled 4 percent (the goal was under 8 percent) and 82 percent of students qualified to go on a special incentive trip.

Mayors speak
Four local mayors will speak April 22 at the North Coast Regional Chamber of Commerce mayor’s luncheon. Avon Mayor James Smith, Avon Lake Mayor Karl Zuber, Sheffield Mayor John Hunter and Sheffield Lake Mayor John Piskura will speak at the event, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Tom’s Country Place, 3442 Stoney Ridge Road, Avon. Tickets are $15 per person, payable at the door by check or cash. Reservations are required and may be made by calling the chamber office at (440) 933-9311 or via e-mail at Sharon@northcoastchamber.com.

Walk for hunger
The 32nd annual Lorain/Elyria Crop Walk will be 9 a.m. Saturday at the Bur Oak picnic area of Lorain County Metro Parks. The annual CROP walk benefits Lorain County’s hunger related programs. If you’re unable to walk and would like to sponsor a walker or serve refreshments at one of the stations along the walk, call St. Paul United Church of Christ at (440) 322-3781 or Pilgrim United Church of Christ at (440) 323-2076.
