The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present. Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Everett "Poppy - Whiskey Joe" Shaffer, 72, of Columbia Station, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Southwest General Hospital, after a short illness.
He was born July 26, 1935 in Horseshoe Run, West Virginia, living in the Lorain County area since 1976.
He was employed by Yellow Freight Lines in Richfield as a truck driver for 24 years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of Teamsters Local 407, and he enjoyed working on lawn mowers and was a big Cleveland Indians fan.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joan; daughters Joann (Don) Reed of Walton Hills, Jeanette (Don) Grodek of Cleveland, Tina (Billy) Shaffer of Elyria, Jackie (Pete) Shaffer of Cleveland; son, Joe (Debbie) Shaffer of Grafton; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers and six sisters, all of Horseshoe Run, West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Gertrude Shaffer; sisters, Jane and Vera.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday evening, April 29, 2008 with visitation from 7 P.M. until the time of service at 8 P.M. at the Blackburn-Duke Funeral Home, 1021 Main St., Grafton.
