ELYRIA — A 29-year-old Elyria man allegedly struck another man in the back with an ax Sunday morning.

Elyria police responded around 11:30 a.m. to the 100 block of Riverside Homes after a caller reported seeing a man chasing another man with an ax.

Police couldn’t locate the individuals, but they received a call from EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria when a man entered the emergency room claiming that he had been struck in the back with an ax.

Doyle Cannon, 22, of Elyria, told police that he had gone to Riverside Homes to a fight a man but ran away when the man grabbed an ax out of a vehicle, according to the police report.

Although he felt the strike to his back, the report said, he said he didn’t know he had been injured until he reached back and saw the blood.

Police took a photo of the wound located on his lower back area, which was 4 inches long, 2 inches wide and nearly an inch deep.

Cannon was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland because of the severity of the wound, the report said, and was treated and released Sunday night.

Demann Wilson, 29, of Elyria, later admitted to police that he had hit Cannon with an ax, but only because the two had been fighting over girlfriends the night before and Cannon had pulled a gun on him, which Wilson had confiscated.

Wilson said he was unsure whether Cannon had again brought along a gun, the report said, and that was why he grabbed the ax.

A girlfriend later dropped off to police the gun Wilson claimed to have taken from Cannon, and it was taken into evidence.
