Cleveland teen to be tried as adult in fatal shooting

A Cleveland teenager will be tried as an adult in the botched robbery that left one Bay Village teen dead and another severely wounded earlier this year.
Cuyahoga County Juvenile Judge Thomas O’Malley ruled Tuesday that there was probable cause to the aggravated murder, attempted murder and robbery charges against 17-year-old Anthony Pollard to allow him to be tried as an adult.
Pattie Oakar, spokeswoman for the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, said because of Pollard’s age and the nature of the charges, Tuesday’s hearing was a formality — under state law Pollard must be tried as an adult.
Pollard, who remains in Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Home, will be held on a $1 million bond while a grand jury considers an indictment against him, Oakar said.
Oakar said Pollard has confessed to firing the shots that killed 19-year-old Mosa Shafik and wounded 17-year-old Zaki Touma, whose parents run a downtown Elyria restaurant.
Anthony Faraj, a 22-year-old Avon man, is facing aggravated murder and other charges that could lead to a death sentence if he’s convicted in the case. Faraj allegedly lured Zaki and Shafik to the area of West 83rd Street in Cleveland where they were shot.
Because Pollard is a juvenile, he would not face death if convicted in the case.
