Amherst grad on ‘The Bachelorette’
Oberlin native Jesse Csincsak did his part to make us fall in love with snowboarding on MTV’s “Made” series.
Starting Monday night, he’ll give it his all to make DeAnna Pappas fall in love with him on ABC’s “The Bachelorette.”
Raised in Amherst and a pro snowboarder who plies his trade in Breckenridge, Colo., Csincsak is among the 25 men who will try to sweep the brunette, brown-eyed Georgia real estate agent off her feet.
“I am interesting,” Csincsak, 25, said with a laugh as he answered his cell phone Wednesday afternoon from his Colorado base, where he and other skilled snowboarders dedicate themselves to helping aspiring snowboarders make it to the Olympics.
Asked about his upcoming celebrity status on the popular ABC reality series, Csincsak said, “I’d love to chat with you, but I’ve legally signed my life away.”
As is the case with contestants on such programs, Csincsak is prohibited from discussing details of his actual experiences on or surrounding the program under terms of confidentiality agreements signed with the network.
“We’d be happy to set something up once he’s not on the show anymore,” said Yani Chang, publicist for the series, which airs its new two-hour season premiere episode 9 to 11 p.m. Monday. Subsequent episodes will air in the show’s regular time slot of 8 to 10 p.m. Mondays starting June 2.
Csincsak was stunned to learn he’d been selected to appear on the series after his cousin, Heather Csincsak, submitted his name online some months ago.
“I had no idea she went online and applied for me,” he said.
He found out he’d been picked when he got a phone call from a family member.
“I’m one of 25 guys and they supposedly screened something like 18,000 to start,” Csincsak said.
Assured of appearing in at least one show, the expert snowboarder will be up against 24 other men ranging in age from 23 to 38. Hailing from states including Texas, Virginia, Washington, California and Oklahoma, their professions include high school football coach, medical sales rep, math teacher, oyster farmer, pro basketball player and barbershop owner.
According to a press release from ABC, Csincsak will be hard to overlook.
Jousting with his fellow testosterone-fueled challengers to make a lasting first impression on Pappas, the Marion L. Steele High School grad “makes an outrageous fashion statement in fluorescent sneakers and flamboyant jacket.”
“They’ll do a large elimination to start,” Csincsak said. “It’s all her call.”
A veteran snowboarder whose resume includes Olympic qualifiers, the Winter Gravity Games and top finishes at the Aspen Open and Copper Mountain Super Pipe Series, Csincsak enjoyed his first national TV exposure on “Made,” an MTV series on which he and a crew of expert snowboarders tried to make a competent snowboarder out of a young woman who had never stepped on a snowboard.
Csincsak, who already knows his fate as the entire series has been filmed, could be among 10 contestants who will be booted at the end of the first episode, leaving 15 to compete in coming weeks. The new season of “Bachelorette” should conclude in July.
Pappas should be familiar to fans of ABC’s counterpart series “The Bachelor.” As the final contestant of last autumn’s “Bachelor” series, she suffered a last-minute rejection by Brad Womack, a “Bachelor” first.
