NORTH OLMSTED — Jordan Hoppel’s name was added to a short list of special athletes in the annals of the Southwestern Conference Track and Field Championships.
The North Olmsted junior won four events at Friday night’s league meet. It was only the eighth time in its 73-year history that a male athlete earned such distinction.
Hoppel won the 100 meters (10.94) and 200 meters (22.70), beating Amherst senior Shawn Chrapczynski (11.28 and 22.70). In the latter race, the two were separated by thousandths of a second.
Hoppel anchored the
800-meter (1:31.20) and
400-meter (43.23) relays to come-from-behind victories. The 800 relay was a meet record. The 400 relay barely missed Westlake’s 1999 meet record (43.18). It was the first time since 1979 the North Olmsted boys won two relay events at the same conference meet.
“It feels great. That was my goal coming in here,” said Hoppel. “That’s what I set for myself at the beginning of the year. I achieved it so I’m very happy about that.”
Hoppel was the first North Olmsted boy to win the 100 since Rob Laseak in 1983.
“Hard work pays off. I worked my butt off in the offseason,” said Hoppel. “Races like the 100 aren’t just about pure talent. You have to prepare before you do anything. You win the race before anyone comes out here and hits the track.”
Chrapczynski nearly stole the race. Hoppel gained a five-stride lead coming off the turn. With 20 meters left, Chrapczynski closed fast and almost denied Hoppel win No. 4.
“Hoppel is an amazing curve runner,” said Chrapczynski, “but I didn’t want him to get four wins. I just maintained my stride and form. I thought I had it because he let up at the end. It’s probably one of the best races I’ve ever ran.”
Seniors Cory Molnar and Keith Troyer and junior Pat Tomko teamed with Hoppel for both relay wins.
“I was beat going into the 200,” said Hoppel. “My approach was, ‘Heck, I’ve got to pull something out here.’” It was tough. This was the hardest meet I’ve ever run in. Just the emotions take a lot out of you.”
North Olmsted had its best finish since 1998, taking second behind Midpark, 126-821/2. It was Midpark’s first league title since winning the Greater Cleveland Conference in 1968. North Olmsted won more events than Midpark (six vs. five), but the Meteors had three seconds and four thirds. The Eagles had no seconds or thirds.
The Brecksville girls won their second title in three years, beating defending champ Westlake, 127-109. The Bees had more firsts (five vs. two) and seconds (six vs. two) than the Demons. Brecksville outscored Westlake in the four distance events, 59-16.
“It was tough. We wanted it very bad,” said Westlake sophomore Megan Davis. “We tried our best. We had a lot of personal records. That’s all we can do.”
Davis chalked up a career best in taking second in the 400 (59.26). Junior Bridget McNeill defended her discus title (127-1) for Westlake. Freshman Kalpana Beach won the high jump (5-2).
Amherst senior Kara Kasper won the 100 high (15.06) and 300 low (47.34) hurdles. She is the first Amherst girl to win two conference hurdle events since Kristy Keplinger in 1986.
Avon Lake junior Sean McCann won shot put (52-101/4) and discus (156-7). He is the first Shoreman thrower to win both events at the same conference meet since Mike D’Andrea did it back-to-back in 2000 and ’01.
Brecksville senior Megan McAdams won four events for the third straight year. She’s only the second athlete in the 35-year history of the girls meet to do that. Midpark freshman Kaila Barber also won four events.
Four meet records were set, two boys and two girls.
