EATON TWP. — Bryant Robertson was not the only reason the Avon boys jumped from sixth in 2007 to a West Shore Conference championship this year, but his presence on the team has been huge all season.
Robertson, who was content to show off his speed only on the football field for the first two years of his high school career, set a WSC meet record in the 100-meter dash, added a win in the 200-meter dash and anchored the first-place
800-meter relay and the second-place 400-meter relay as Avon won its first-ever conference title quite comfortably.
The Eagles racked up 129½ points to easily leave behind runner-up Rocky River (106½) Friday at Midview’s Adelsberg Stadium.
Robertson, a junior, is a rookie on the track team. He’s been a linebacker and safety for the Avon football team for three years.
“I was trying to concentrate on football,” Robertson said. “I ran indoor track in the winter.”
But track coach Scott Lanham and football coach Mike Elder convinced him to share the wealth.
“We knew he was talented,” Lanham said. “I just didn’t know he was as fast as he is.”
Fast enough to cover the 100 meters in 11.05 seconds, 0.15 seconds faster than the previous record.
“Bryant’s coming out for track has made a huge difference,” Lanham said. “He’s an outstanding kid. He works hard and has taken a leadership role. But all 45 guys have worked hard. We set goals for ourselves and winning the conference was one of them. This was an all-around team effort.”
The Eagles also got a meet record from Dan Smith in the 1,600-meter run, breaking the mark set last year by Vermilion’s Nate Cremean. Cremean also eclipsed his WSC record in finishing second.
Drew Ebersole of Midview broke his own WSC record in the shot put by 10 feet, 2½ inches (58-8). Rob Catalano of Midview was second with a put of 51-3¼, also better than Ebersole’s ’07 record toss.
Rocky River ran away with the girls championship, setting a pair of WSC records along the way. The star of the girls meet was Fairview’s Jessica Zangmeister, who set meet records in the 1,600 and 3,200.
Lindsay Forconi of Vermilion won the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Avon’s Christina Herbst added a win in the discus to the record-setting shot put she achieved Wednesday.
