Condos target empty-nesters
AMHERST — Despite the abysmal housing market, a Columbus developer thinks his new condos in Quarry Lakes at Amherst will sell.
“We think we’re going for the right demographic. There is a real lack of similar product here. We feel there’s pent-up demand for it,” Jonathan Wilcox of Long & Wilcox, LLC, said.
The demographic he’s targeting is couples in their 50s or older who are looking to retire or streamline their lives by trading bigger homes for a simplified lifestyle. To date, three of the condos have been purchased by middle-aged Amherst couples.
The first phase of a planned 70 units in Quarry Lakes, being built off Cooper Foster Road about a half-mile west of state Route 58, will be unveiled today from 1 to 7 p.m.
Amherst Mayor David Taylor said the 19-acre condo development is a big deal for the city because it is one of the first major condominium developments setting its sights on local people.
Ranging in price from $169,900 to $209,900, most of the 70 two- and three-bedroom condos are one-floor designs that can be adapted for handicapped accessibility. Other units have a second-story loft.
A yet-to-be-built clubhouse will include a heated outdoor pool, fitness center and community room.
