Oberlin Schools Endowment Fund seeks donations

The Oberlin Schools Endowment Fund is celebrating 20 years of supporting Oberlin Schools students with its “20 for 20 Campaign” and is seeking donations.

Tax-deductible donations of $20 will go to the fund, which was established two decades ago by the Oberlin Board of Education.

Since then, hundreds of grants totaling more than $350,000 have been awarded to fund programs such as Safety Town at Eastwood Elementary, Science Camp at Prospect Elementary, We-Me Bullying program at Langston Middle School and the gingerbread house project at Oberlin High School.

According to the district, nearly every student in the Oberlin Schools has benefited from the programs these grants have helped to fund.

Students have been able to participate in programs that cross all curriculum areas, as well as programs that build cooperation, self-esteem and leadership skills.

The Oberlin Schools Endowment Fund is under the umbrella of the Community Foundation of Lorain County.

Only the investment income is used each year. As that principal grows from donations, more money is made available for grants.

This year, nearly $25,000 was awarded to help fund 22 programs in the district.

Donations can be sent to Oberlin Schools Endowment Fund, 153 N. Main St., Oberlin, OH 44074.

Wellington home damaged by fire

A fire Friday caused about $40,000 in damage to a home at 118 Grand Ave., Wellington, said Fire Lt. Bill Brown.

The residents, Roberta and Dave Schoonover, were not at home when the fire was reported at 1:33 p.m. It took about an half hour to get the fire under control, Brown said.

He said the fire started in the basement and basement fires are difficult to fight because the stairwell acts as a chimney.

“We were able to get some guys down the steps pretty quickly,” Brown said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Schoonovers are both teachers at McCormick Middle School. She is a special education teacher, and he teaches sixth grade.
