EHS class of 1939 reunited in June
One of Elyria High’s oldest classes, the class of 1939, celebrated its 69th reunion on June 21 in the Cascade Room of Wesleyan Village.

Alum Jean (Crisp) Bowen contacted all living graduates. Out of a class of 350, 217 graduates have died and of the 121 living graduates 85 either responded or attended the festivites.

Included in the attendees was Maynard Unger, a war veteran and prisioner of war who withstood 22 months of captivity. Unger was honored by his former classmates.

Although unable to attend, the class of 1939 also paid special tribute to the last remaining teacher of the class. Elizabeth Brown Curry, 94, was an English teacher when the class graduated.

Organizers of this year’s reunion thank all who came out for the 29th consecutive reunion, where humorist and writer C.R. Rae spoke.

Scout’s project get Gold Award
An Elyria teen has received the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn by refurbishing a children’s swing set for a local organization aimed at helping families in crisis.

For her Gold Award project, Megan Anderson built a swing set for Blessing House for Kids in Lorain. Yet after hours of work alongside family and friends, Anderson ’s project was not complete until she could also do something to teach children about how to be safe around the new equipment. So Anderson developed a playground safety book, to teach them.

The set was a welcome addition to the home’s play area, said director Sister Mary Berigan.

“It was a lot for a girl her age to take on as a project, but she eagerly did the work even though she didn’t have any real building background,” Berigan said.

Anderson found out about the Blessing House through the Gold Award project coordinator and through her schooling at St. Jude School, where Berigan was once principal.

“What I learned about myself most during my Gold Award project is that I can’t control everything,” Anderson said. “I found that I have to be aware of the unexpected and when faced with these dilemmas, I have to be prepared to deal with them the best way I can.”
