Regina disqualified; EC girls back in

ELYRIA — Elyria Catholic girls basketball team is back in the game after the Ohio High School Athletic Association disqualified Regina, the team that defeated Elyria Catholic on Wednesday night.
Elyria Catholic now will face Smithsville at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cuyahoga Falls High School,  which is a suburb of Akron.

Accident near Avon Commons sends two people to area hospitals

AVON — A two-car accident at the Detroit Road entrance to Avon Commons sent two people to area hospitals this morning.

Elyria Auditor Ted Pileski’s salary donation $4,551, not $1,295

Ohio bowling alleys want video slots, too

COLUMBUS — Ohio bowling centers are arguing they should be allowed to offer video slot machines, too, if the state’s horse racing tracks get them.

South Amherst Fire Department receives grant of nearly $50,000

The South Amherst Fire Department has received a $49,676 grant from FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.
According to a news release from Sen. Sherrod Brown, AFG grants target fire departments and EMS organizations that are unaffiliated with hospitals to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public and first-responder personnel.

Careless cooking damages Lorain home overnight

LORAIN — A woman who left food cooking and forgot about it caused about $12,000 worth of damage to her mother’s home overnight.
Lorain firefighters were called to 1501 Shaffer Drive a little after 3 a.m. for a fire in the kitchen on one side of the duplex, according to Assistant Fire Chief Randy Hupp.

Fire overnight damages 3 South Lorain garages, car

LORAIN — Lorain firefighters responded overnight to a fire that destroyed one South Lorain garage and damaged two others and a car.
Firefighters were called to 4421 Camden Ave. about 4:40 a.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Randy Hupp. Camden runs between Homewood Drive and Fairless Avenue east of Southview High School.

ACORN agrees to leave Ohio in lawsuit settlement

COLUMBUS — The community organizing group ACORN has agreed to permanently give up its business license in Ohio, under a settlement with a libertarian organization.
