ELYRIA — Thursday marked the end of the school year and start of summer vacation for students in Elyria City Schools.Well, for most students, that is.
Students at Kindergarten Village, Crestwood Elementary School, Franklin Elementary School, Oakwood Elementary School and Westwood Junior High had to return to the classrooms today because the schools were forced to close six days during the school year.
The state allows schools five calamity days a school year for bad weather or other calamities. Any days over five that are missed must be made up.
And local schools had a variety of calamities this year — snow, ice, bitter cold, bomb threats and, most unexpected of all, a tornado.
Crestwood, Westwood and Kindergarten Village students had to return to the classroom today because of a tornado that swept through the Griswold Road area in March, forcing the schools to close.
Franklin and Oakwood elementaries had to close for a sixth day earlier this year because of water and power outages.
All of those students will start their summer vacations when the school bell rings this afternoon.
