Mary Ellen "Babe" Gonas (nee Settlemire), 90, of Lorain, died Thursday June 7, 2007 at her home after a short illness. She was born April 16, 1917 in Lorain and had resided in Lorain most of her life. She had also lived in Pennsylvania.
Mary Ellen worked for the Lorain Schools as a baker in the cafeteria retiring in 1982. For over 40 years she worked at the American Slovak Club during Friday Fish Fry and at other events in the banquet hall.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain, the Altar & Rosary Society of the church, United Slovak Societies, Jednota and the American Slovak Club Ladies Auxiliary.
Mary Ellen enjoyed bingo, crocheting, knitting, crafts, baking, being with her family and was an avid Cleveland Browns and Indians fan.
She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Stitak of Beecher, IL and Linda Teets of Lorain; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Doris Ruminsky of Amherst and Dorothy Presutto of Lorain; brother, Francis Hoye of FL. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Edward J. Gonas on June 18, 2006; father, Isaac Perry Settlemire; mother, Anna Settlemire-Hoye (nee Rager); stepfather, Steve Hoye; brothers, Martin "Huck" Settlemire, Arthur "Buzz" Settlemire and Donald "Timer" Settlemire; and sisters, Anna Shoup, Nell Butler and Myrtle Mikolic.
The family will receive friends Sunday 5 to 8 P.M. at the Gluvna Shimo Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain, where the Holy Trinity Altar & Rosary Society will pray the rosary Sunday at 5 P.M. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9 A.M. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 9:30 A.M. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2428 Elyria Ave., Lorain.
