Russell Forsythe Cahill, of Elyria, 80, died at the Hospice of St. Joseph in Lorain on Wednesday, June 6, 2007 following a short battle with kidney cancer. He was born February 27, 1927 in Peabody, Massachusetts to the late William and Frances Cahill.
He graduated Ridgewood High School (New Jersey) in 1944, served as a radio technician in the U.S. Navy during WW II, and received a BS in Chemical Engineering from Syracuse University in 1949. At Syracuse, he played varsity soccer and belonged to the social fraternity Sigma Chi, and was a member of the professional chemistry fraternity Alpha Chi Sigma. His job as process engineer with the Brown, Lipe, and Chapin Division of GM brought him to Elyria in 1949. In 1953 he joined B.F. Goodrich Chemical Company’s development center at Avon Lake as a junior technical man. A colleague recently wrote, "Russ trained and mentored group after group of new engineers over the years and was single-handedly responsible for producing an active involved membership for B.F. Goodrich in the local section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers." He retired in 1990 as a Senior Engineering Scientist.
Living life to the fullest was his philosophy. A man of many facets, he was an avid reader, and enjoyed fishing, carpentry, and working in his backyard. He traveled extensively and treasured visits with family, relatives, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Serrell.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Vimpeny Garland; sons, Russell Jr., of New York City, Jonathan, of Toledo, and Bradford (wife, Beth) of Fairfax, VA; a daughter, Susan Dent (husband, Steve) of Canton.
