Motorcycle crash kills Wakeman woman

BROWNHELM TWP. — A Wakeman woman died early Friday when the motorcycle on which she was a passenger struck a tree on Vermilion Road in Brownhelm Township, Ohio Highway Patrol troopers said.
Tara Redmond, 22, died shortly after the early morning crash just north of Portman Road, troopers said.
The motorcycle was being driven by Jody McKinney, 32, of Vermilion, troopers said.
Troopers said the pair was traveling north on Vermilion Road when McKinney lost control while turning into a curve, sending the bike off the side of the road before striking a tree, trooper said.
Both occupants were thrown from the motorcycle and into a wooded area, troopers said, adding that alcohol is believed to have contributed to the crash.
Redmond later was pronounced dead; McKinney was taken to Community Health Partners Regional Medical Center for treatment, troopers said.
Redmond was a nursing student at Lorain County Community College, and she was doing her clinical work at CHP.
She also worked part-time at Vermilion Country Club and was a waitress at Blue Sky Restaurant in Amherst. She was a 2003 graduate of Firelands High School, where she was heavily involved in sports.
