The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present. Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Robert Roy Cornelius, 86, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, June 15, 2007 at North Ridge Health Care Center in North Ridgeville following a brief illness. He was born March 25, 1921 in Lorain, where he was raised and graduated from Lorain High School. He has been a resident of Amherst for the last forty-nine years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II in the New Guinea, the North Solomon Islands, South Philippines, and Luzon areas as an Air Traffic Controller. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with four bronze stars, the Philippines Liberation Medal with one bronze star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal. Robert was employed with the US Steel Mill in Lorain for forty-two years, retiring from the Production Planning Department. He was a member of St. Peter of United Church of Christ in Amherst. Robert was active with the Firelands Council of Boy Scouts and remained with the council until receiving the Silver Beaver Award. He also was also a nineteen-year volunteer with Community Health Partner H & S Center in Lorain. He was a member of the Elyria AMVETS and enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, and camping as a family.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Cornelius (nee: Barcert); his son, Scott Cornelius of Sheffield Lake; his daughter, Lori Mairs of Sterling, VA; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; several brothers; and a sister.
Friends may call Sunday and Monday, June 17th and 18th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services with the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard performing honors will be held Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at 11 A.M. from St. Peter United Church of Christ, 582 Church St., Amherst. The Rev. Mark Pemberton, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
