AMERICAN LEGION: Elyria 13, MANSFIELD 4
Post 12 pounds on short-handed Mansfield

GRAFTON — With only 10 players in uniform, the Richland Veterans, the Mansfield American Legion team, didn’t have much of a margin for error.
The margin was wide, and errors — both the official and the unofficial kinds — were the major reason Elyria Post 12 went away with a 13-4 victory in a Buckeye American Legion Conference game Tuesday that was stopped after 61/2 innings because of darkness.
“They came without a full team,” Elyria coach Brad Chenoweth said. “That’s not the team they’re going to bring to the tournament (July in Fremont), I guarantee. Half their team was missing, and that was the difference.”
Mansfield committed six errors. The three pitchers walked 10, threw three wild pitches, committed a balk and hit two Elyria batters. There was also a passed ball.
“Games like these are not a lot of fun for anyone,” Chenoweth said. “It’s good to be on the winning side. We were on the other side of a couple games like this in our tournament in West Virginia this past weekend. I’m glad we took advantage of their mistakes.”
The loss was the first for Mansfield (9-3) in six Buckeye Conference games. Elyria evened its conference record at 3-3 and improved its overall mark to 8-6.
Travis Stephens had three hits and scored five runs for Post 12. Kevin Allen scored four times and Kull McClurg had three RBIs for Elyria.
Elyria jumped up 2-0 in the first. Kevin Allen walked and Stephens doubled. A wild pitch sent Allen home and a ground ball to second by McClurg scored Stephens.
Nick Kennedy’s sacrifice fly to center field scored Stephens to make it 3-0 in the third inning. Stephens reached on a dropped third strike, took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on another McClurg groundout to second.
Elyria tacked on two more in the fourth. Allen walked and Stephens singled with one out. Both moved up on a wild pitch before McClurg’s soft line drive over first was caught by Mansfield second baseman Kyle Sprague. Allen was able to tag up and come home as Sprague was moving to the foul line on the catch. An infield error scored Stephens.
Mansfield chased Elyria starter Brenton Brada from the game with three runs in the fifth. Bill Ratliff had an RBI triple, Derek Schafer drove in Ratliff with a ground ball to shortstop and Matt Brown got a run home on a fielder’s choice grounder to short.
Elyria broke it open with five runs in the fifth. Allen, Stephens and McClurg had RBI singles, Kennedy walked with the bases loaded and Ryan Rua was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Jake Loczi doubled to lead off Elyria’s sixth inning. He scored on an infield grounder by Allen, who got aboard when the throw to first went wild. Stephens walked and McClurg’s ground ball to third was thrown away to load the bases again. Ben Kubuski delivered a run-scoring fly ball to left field, Bill Koubek was hit by a pitch and Rua walked to force in the final run for Post 12.
Post 12 will be back at Grafton tonight to welcome cross-county rival Avon Lake.
