The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present.  Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

James Edward Markle

James Edward Markle, 80, and a resident of Lorain, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2007, at South West General Hospital ER. He was born November 1, 1926 in Hanover, PA. He graduated from Lehigh University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and from Baldwin Wallace College with Masters Degree in Engineering. Jim led a long life of service to the community throughout his career at Ohio Edison, ensuring the communities he served had adequate and affordable power. His commitment of 43 years started as an Electrical Engineer and included various management positions, most notably as the Lake Erie Division General Manager for 15 years and then for the years prior to his retirement as President and Chairman of the Board of Penn Power, a division of Ohio Edison. Jim’s involvement in local professional communities included being a Rotarian in Amherst, Elyria, Lorain, and Marion, and New Castle, PA in a variety of positions, including President and he was also a Paul Harris Fellow.
He was the Director of the Lorain County Society of Professional Engineers early in his career and was a Senior Fellow after retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post #397, AMVETS Post #22, Beaver Creek Hunt and Gun Club, the Lorain County Senior Fellowship, and the Vermilion Power Squadron. Jim was a man of faith and served in various positions, including Deacon, at the Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ. He was Master Mason in the Scottish Rite Freemason at the Stonington Lodge F and AM in Amherst and the Valley of New Castle. He also enjoyed sailing, shooting, and researching genealogy and was an avid reader on numerous topics.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Rose E. Markle (nee Earner); sons, John D. Markle of West Ruppert, VT and Richard J. Markle of Austin, TX; daughter Kathryn R. Markle of The Woodlands, TX; 2 grandchildren; brother Malcum Markle of Hanover, PA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Preston and Mertie H. Markle (nee Wentz); and by his infant brother John Markle.
Friends may call Thursday, July 5, 2007, from 4 to 7 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst.  Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 6, 2007, at 11 A.M. from the funeral home.  The Rev. Attila Szemesi, pastor of Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ, 379 South Main St., Amherst 44001.
Arrangements  are being handled by the Hempel Funeral Home.
