The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present. Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Charles Jack Fern, 72, of LaGrange, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at his home following a lengthy illness. Mr. Fern was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. After the service, he worked 17 years in the paint department at Sears, and then retired from U.S. Steel in Lorain, where he worked as a Coil Shear Man in the Bar Mill for 35 years. He was a member of Sugar Ridge Baptist Church and attended the Son Shine Club on Tuesdays. Jack loved to work and go camping. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Shelby (nee Burdette); sons, Robert Fern of Marion, IN, Charles Fern of Amherst, Ken Fern of LaGrange; and adopted son, Ken Fern Jr.; brother, James Fern of Elyria; sisters, Grace Porter of Lorain, Barbra Benny of Newbern, NC, Gloria Powell of Elyria; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elsie (nee Ramsell) Fern, and daughter, Vicky Lynn Fern, in infancy.
Memorial Service will be 2 P.M., July 8, 2007, at Sugar Ridge Baptist Church. The Rev. Mike Manosky, pastor, will officiate. Wyers Funeral Home handled arrangements.
