Man charged with assault on pregnant woman

ELYRIA — A 28-year-old registered sex offender from Florida was charged with felonious assault on June 28 after kicking his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach and assaulting her repeatedly, a sheriff’s report said.
Angel Tamayo was arrested near the Elyria Motel on Oberlin-Elyria Road, where he and his 18-year-old girlfriend had been renting a room when he assaulted her, the report said.
The 18-year-old woman — who was 21 weeks pregnant during the assault — was taken by ambulance to EMH Regional Medical Center, then flown by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
A MetroHealth spokeswoman said Friday that the victim was treated in the hospital’s emergency room, but didn’t register as a long-term patient and was no longer at the hospital.
The woman called 911 about 7 p.m. on June 28, shortly after Tamayo assaulted her in a drunken rage, the report said.
When deputies arrived, they found the woman lying on the motel room floor, crying as she held a blood-soaked towel between her legs in an effort to stop the bleeding caused when Tamayo kicked her in the stomach, the report said.
The woman told deputies Tamayo had arrived at her motel room that evening drunk, and he flew into a rage when she asked him why he had been drinking. Tamayo “got very angry and started cussing at her and calling her all kinds of names,” the report said.
The woman — a Florida native — tried to call her mother for a bus ticket home, but Tamayo got behind her before she could grab the phone and put her in a chokehold, causing her to pass out for an unknown period of time, the report said.
Eventually the woman regained consciousness and was awake when Tamayo kicked her once in the stomach, the report said. When she screamed, Tamayo stuck his thumb in her mouth, cutting her tongue with his nail, the report said.
Tamayo then punched her in the back of the head a few times before walking to the door and blocking her exit, the report said. When the woman told Tamayo she was calling the police, he got up and left the room.
Deputies who arrived at the room that evening found it in complete disarray, with the sheets and bedding soaked in blood, the report said.
Deputies later found Tamayo walking near The Brass Pole strip club on Oberlin-Elyria Road. Upon investigating, they discovered he was a registered sex offender from Florida, where he’d been convicted of lewd and lascivious conduct with a minor under 16 years old.
The status of the woman’s unborn child was unknown late Friday because deputy’s supervisor couldn’t be reached for comment.
However, a spokesman at the Cuyahoga County coroner’s office said the coroner had not handled any cases this past week that would have stemmed from the woman’s assault.
Tamayo is being held at the county jail in lieu of a $15,000 bond, a jail official said Friday.
