The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present. Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Sophia A. Karbowniczek (nee Kruczynski), 80, of Elyria, died Wednesday at the Elyria Wesleyan Village following a brief illness. She was born July 24, 1926 in Elyria, and was a lifelong Elyria resident. Mrs. Karbowniczek worked in the bakery at the former Harvest House Restaurant. She also worked at several area Convenient Food Mart Stores and worked part time at the Shipula Farm Market on Lake Avenue in Elyria. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Elyria, and the Elyria United Polish Club Auxiliary, and enjoyed bingo.
Survivors include daughter, Mary Ann (Terry) Shipula of Elyria; sons, Jerry and Ron Karbowniczek, both of Elyria; two grandchildren; sister, Helen Kolody of Lorain; brother, Frank Kruczynski of Aberdeen, MD.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Karbowniczek; daughter, Barbara Karbowniczek; step-sister, Mary Skingle; brothers, Joseph, Anthony, Victor, Edward Krucinski, and Stanley and John Kruczynski; step-brothers, Steve Karby, Stan and Frank Karbowniczek.
Friends may call Friday, 4 to 7 P.M. at the Bauer-Laubenthal Funeral Home, Chestnut Ridge Rd., at State Rt. 57, Elyria.
Services will be Saturday at 9:30 A.M., in the funeral home, followed by a 10 A.M. Mass at Holy Cross Church, 1417 West Avenue, Elyria. The Rev. Edmund Goldbach will be the Celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria. Memorial contributions can be made to the CHP Regional Foundation/New Life Hospice, 3700 Kolbe Rd., Lorain OH 44053.
