Elyria native killed in crash

CARLISLE TWP. — A Sullivan man died Saturday morning when his motorcycle crashed after striking a curb on Oberlin-Elyria Road, Ohio Highway Patrol troopers said.
Michael Braig, 38, died at the scene from head and neck injuries, said county Coroner Paul Matus.
Braig was headed south on Oberlin-Elyria Road around 7 a.m. when his 2006 Harley-Davidson went off the right side of the road and struck a curb just north of Steelton Street, troopers said.
The collision with the curb caused the motorcycle to flip and throw Braig from the vehicle, troopers said.
Carlisle Township firefighters who responded to the scene said there was a motorcycle helmet lying on the ground at the crash site; it was unknown if Braig had been wearing it when he crashed.
Braig was headed back to his Sullivan home after working third shift at Ridge Tool in Elyria, said Kim Braig, his wife.
The Braigs were both Elyria High School students in the 1980s and are Elyria natives.
“We moved out here about 20 years ago,” Kim Braig said Saturday. “We were married 17 years.”
Kim Braig said her husband was a very social man “with a lot of friends.”
“He was loyal, trustworthy — a good father,” she said.
Michael Braig purchased his Harley-Davidson motorcycle about a year ago, Kim Braig said. She said he enjoyed the long motorcycle ride from Sullivan to Elyria.
The couple have two sons, ages 13 and 8. Their oldest son died about two years ago at age 12 from an asthma attack, Kim Braig said.
