Northwood assistant principal named Elyria High’s newest athletic director

ELYRIA — Elyria school officials on Tuesday appointed Elyria native and Elyria Schools employee Gerald Chizmar as the district’s new athletic director.
“I’m just going to be myself and do what I can to improve athletics in Elyria,” Chizmar said. “It’s a great opportunity — I’m very excited to get started and do what I can to provide opportunities for the kids of Elyria.”
Chizmar, a 1984 EHS graduate, has two daughters and a son in Elyria’s elementary schools.
His teaching career with Elyria started in 1994 as a health and science teacher at Westwood Junior High.
In 2005, he was hired as assistant principal at Northwood Junior High, where he has served until Tuesday’s appointment as the district’s athletic director.
“I’ve always enjoyed the effects coaching has,” he said. “Working with kids, I want to expand on that.”
Chizmar also served as head coach of Elyria High School’s cross-country team from 1997 to 2004, as well as head track coach at the high school from 2000 to 2005. During those years, the teams won a number of conference titles and other notable achievements.
