Arms, ‘D’ get Avon to state

AVON — Avon’s 11-year-old All-Star team proved that it doesn’t have to bludgeon an opponent to win a baseball game.
Not even a championship game.
The Lorain Countians struggled uncharacteristically at the plate, but showed excellent pitching and flawless defense in beating Tallmadge 4-0 to win the District 3 championship Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Park.
Avon advances to the Little League state tournament in Eaton on July 28.
“I told the team last night that this would be a high-scoring game,” said Avon manager Kurt Walker. “That shows how much I know. But we’ve worked hard on other aspects. That might be the best game that Mitch (Tomlin) has pitched in his life. And we played flawless defense.”
Tomlin and reliever Johnny Morales shut down Tallmadge on two hits and allowed just two runners to reach third base.
Both hits were clean but neither was hit hard and those were the only two balls to leave the infield.
Meanwhile, Avon’s defense sparkled. Among the nifty plays were two 3-1 putouts — first baseman to the pitcher covering. And the winners threw out a would-be base-stealer.
“They played a good game on defense and we flawed it on ‘D’,” said Tallmadge manager Todd Genovese.
Avon only had four hits and all of its runs were unearned, helped by two critical Tallmadge errors.
Through four scoreless innings Avon only had two hits — both doubles by Ian Long — off Tallmadge starter Zach Mosholder. In the fifth, Braedon Friss worked a walk and went to second on a groundout. After the second out, Tomlin hit one to center that Tallmadge’s Bryce Fuller appeared to catch, tumbling forward, but the ball came loose as he was falling to the grass and Friss scored.
“I thought he caught the ball and I asked the umpire if the ball came loose when he fell,” Genovese said. “The umpire said it didn’t make any difference. So that was the end of that.”
In the sixth, Tommy Glenn reached on an error and came home on a double by Alex Tomko, but even here the Tallmadge defense leaked. A good relay throw to the plate would have nailed Glenn. With two out, Shawn Traine belted a two-run homer.
“That (hit) fired them up,” said Walker, speaking of his team. “He’s a strong kid. That’s the second big home run he’s hit in the tournament.”
Tallmadge got a runner to third in the bottom of the sixth, but Morales got Joey Lowery on a grounder to first to end the game.
Just two days ago, Tallmadge swatted four homers — three consecutively in the first inning — in a 12-2 rout of Elyria East.
“We’ve been killing the ball,” Genovese said. “But tonight we couldn’t wait on the pitches. We didn’t hit.”
“We’ve had 13 guys contribute to all four wins in this tournament,” Walker said. “This is a great team.”
