Avon, North set for rematch

ELYRIA — Avon’s 9-10-year-old all-stars didn’t want their ride on the tournament trail to end at North Park on Wednesday.
With that in mind, manager Mike Stump’s team posted an 11-8 victory over Elyria North in a District 3 North Division game that saw more than its share of controversy.
Avon, with one loss in the double-elimination tournament, handed North its first loss. The two teams will meet today at Veterans Park at 6 p.m. to determine who plays the South Division champion.
Even the final score wasn’t decided without controversy. Avon had scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning before North loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning.
Darkness set in, forcing officials to declare the game official after the last completed inning. The ruling wiped out all offensive statistics in the sixth inning. But, pitching statistics remain.
“I definitely didn’t like the stall tactics at the end,” said North manager Denny Szalai. “We thought the game would have been called a lot earlier and would have been picked up at the point of suspension.”
After each team scored three runs in the first inning, Avon sent 11 batters to the plate in the second, scoring six runs on four hits, before leaving the bases loaded. Colin McNamara and Mike Collins had doubles, while Will Sharer and Alex Guzik singled.
“Our whole batting order hit the ball hard, especially in the second inning,” said Mike Stump. “We knew we had to score a lot of runs to win this game.”
Avon added a run in the third and fifth innings. Meanwhile, North scored once in the third and twice each in the fifth and sixth innings, but stranded two in the fifth and left the bases loaded in the sixth.
Collin Majoras singled home North’s runs in the fifth and sixth before the game was called. Andrew Galloway scored what appeared to be a ninth North run in the sixth, but was tagged out at the plate on another controversial call.
