Elyria makes history

9-10 girls down Avon, earn first trip to state

ELYRIA — One way or another, something that had never before happened was going to happen.
It happened for Elyria, which beat Avon,
20-10, in a Little League 9-10 girls softball District 3 championship game Thursday at Vic Janowicz Park to advance to the state tournament in Bucyrus next weekend.
“I told the girls they had a chance to make history, and they did,” Elyria manager Tom Daly said. “They’re a good group of kids.”
Neither Elyria nor Avon had ever reached the state tournament for the 9-10 girls age group.
Elyria pounded 13 hits in the game, shortened to four innings by the 10-run rule. Elyria scored five unearned runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth to end the evening and had 15 stolen bases for the night.
“We built this team on hitting and speed,” Daly said. “They’re not real fast, but they’re good baserunners.”
“Hitting is where they really excel. They love to swing the bats. That will carry us a long way, because the pitching is young.”
Michelle Ray and Taylor O’Dell combined to do the pitching. The pair limited Avon to four hits – two each by Kaylee Pischoneri and Rachel Chokan – but walked 11, including seven in Avon’s six-run fourth inning.
Avon jumped to a 2-0 lead after a half-inning. Pischoneri got it started with a two-out single and scored on an outfield error. Chokan singled in Katie Gauntner.
Elyria responded with three runs and six stolen bases in its half of the first. Kandis Laseke and Megan Higley had run-scoring hits.
Avon scored twice without the benefit of a hit in the second, but Elyria scored eight times in its half of the inning. Ray had two hits in the second, including a two-run single. Kaitlyn Laseke had one of her two doubles. Anna Daly and Sybil Roseboro had RBI hits.
Ray worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third via a force at home and a strikeout. Elyria scored four more times in the third, with Roseboro and Ryley Cline getting hits.
Pischoneri’s two-run single was the only hit in the fourth inning for Avon as Elyria’s lead was trimmed to 15-10. Mackenzie Kistler, Kaitlyn Laseke, Kandis Laseke and Higley had hits in the fourth for Elyria. Higley scored the game-ending run on a bases-loaded ground ball by Ray with one out.
Elyria begins state tournament play July 28.
