Man found adrift in lake dies

LORAIN — A local boater died after being found 500 yards west of his abandoned boat in Lake Erie on Sunday.
The Lorain Coast Guard responded to a call at 5 p.m. when another boater noticed an unmanned boat drifting off the coast.
Upon arrival, the Coast Guard received another call from a boater who had come across a man in distress floating in the water.
Petty Officer Jason Blackmon said the man was wearing a lifejacket and calling for help 500 yards west of where his boat was found.
The Coast Guard zipped over to help the man, but he was no longer breathing by the time they pulled him into the boat.
CPR was performed, and an ambulance took him to Community Health Partners Hospital in Lorain where he was later pronounced dead.
Blackmon said the rough two- to three-foot waves likely caused the man to fall out of his 23-foot fishing boat.
No one else was aboard the boat, he said, and a small cut on the man’s calf was the only visible trauma, according to the Coast Guard. The boat was taken back to its dock at Beaver Creek Boat Club.
The name of the boater was not available at presstime.
