Avon bicyclist, 41, hit by tractor-trailer, dies

AVON — A 41-year-old man bicycling near a gas station on Colorado Avenue was killed when his bike was struck by a tractor-trailer turning into the station’s truck lot.
Gary Krach of Avon died at the scene shortly after
8:30 a.m. Saturday after being struck by the tractor-trailer, which was driven by a 67-year-old man from Detroit, a police report said.
The accident happened less than 30 minutes after Krach left his Fairwood Circle home, said his wife, Cara Krach.
Cara said she expected her husband to return within 30 minutes when he left about 8 a.m. She feared the worst when he didn’t return. The trek down state Route 611 was a part of his normal bike route, one he took a couple a times a week, she said. Krach died of internal injuries as well as severe multiple blunt force traumas, the result of which came from the impact of being struck and from being dragged, county Coroner Paul Matus said.
The crash remains under investigation. Krach rode for physical fitness as well as fun, Cara Krach said.
“He just wanted to take good care of himself and the discipline that it required was very important to him,” she said. “We were not as dedicated as he was and sometimes he got on us about that, but we all tried to pay attention to it. He was even starting to get the boys started in weight training.”
Krach’s passion for healthy living even touched his work at Simpler Consulting, where he was a consultant in the health care division, his wife said.
Krach was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Westlake. He and his wife were married for 17 years and had two children, Joshua, 13, and Justin, 11. Krach was born and raised in Saginaw, Mich., but in May 2006 moved his family to Avon from Huron.
Cara said she will always remember her husband’s giving and humble spirit. He was the kind of guy who would make an effort to call a waiter by name and look them in the eye, she said.
“He wanted to treat everybody with respect,” she said.
