Browns camp lowdown

WHAT HAPPENED: The Browns fought through two practices in stifling heat. League officials were in camp to officiate practice and update the team on new rules.
UH-O: Defensive end Orpheus Roye will likely miss at least the preseason following arthroscopic knee surgery today to have cartilage cleaned out. Roye, 34, has battled knee injuries for two seasons and missed the final five games of 2006. The Browns hope he can return for the regular-season opener.
QB DERBY: Once again, neither candidate impressed. Derek Anderson looked good early, completing a pair of passes to Travis Wilson and one to tight end Ryan Krause, but he misfired late and threw an interception to Daven Holly on a pass into the end zone. Charlie Frye was terrible early, even on short passes, and only rebounded slightly.
HOLDING OUT: Rookie quarterback Brady Quinn missed his eighth and ninth practices.
SITTING OUT: Cornerback DeMario Minter (foot) and receiver Mike Mason were on the stationary bikes. Cornerback Gary Baxter skipped the morning practice but returned in the evening.
CAMPER OF THE DAY: Safety Brodney Pool broke up consecutive passes to the tight ends, one from Anderson and one from Frye. He made good reads, then was quick enough to jump in front of the passes.
PLAY OF THE DAY: Anderson hit Wilson for a touchdown in the back right corner of the end zone. Left tackle Kevin Shaffer stopped linebacker Kamerion Wimbley on the pass rush, and Wilson beat rookie cornerback Eric Wright.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I told you guys my sole goal was to come here and get in the playoffs, get in the Super Bowl. I think we’re off in the right direction and things are going to start changing around Cleveland.” — Receiver Joe Jurevicius.
