Browns camp: Friday lowdown

WHAT HAPPENED: The team worked on situations, including Hail Mary passes and last-play laterals, during a half-speed morning practice. It scrimmaged for about an hour in the evening.
WHAT’S NEXT: The team is off today after eight straight days to open training camp. They will practice Sunday from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
SUSPENDED: Right tackle Ryan Tucker will be suspended for the first four games of the regular season after testing positive for steroids in the offseason. He will continue to practice and play in the preseason. Kevin Shaffer and Kelly Butler will compete for the vacated starting job.
QB DERBY: Charlie Frye leads after a week. He led the first-team offense to a field goal vs. the second-team defense, and was the only quarterback to score a touchdown in red zone drills. He also set up a
50-yard Phil Dawson field goal in the two-minute drill. Derek Anderson, who led the first-team offense against the first-team defense in the red zone and two-minute drills, almost threw an interception, had the ball slip out of his hand and was the victim of a Steve Heiden drop in the end zone.
HOLDING OUT: Rookie quarterback Brady Quinn missed his 11th and 12th practices. GM Phil Savage said there were brief discussions Friday but didn’t sound optimistic.
SITTING OUT: Backup running back Jason Wright and backup guard Isaac Sowells missed their second day of practice with concussions. Cornerback DeMario Minter (foot) and receivers Tim Carter (tight hamstring) and Mike Mason (knee) missed both practices. Cornerback Gary Baxter (knee surgery) took the morning off but returned for the evening practice.
CAMPER OF THE DAY: Running back Jamal Lewis continued his solid camp. He was able to turn the corner on a sweep and converted a fourth down on a pitchout. He’s showed good feet and quickness.
PLAY OF THE DAY: Dawson was good by about 10 yards on the 50-yard field goal to end the two-minute drive. He was also perfect in a field-goal drill, kicking a few balls onto the roof of team headquarters.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I didn’t intend to compromise the integrity of the NFL, my team. I want to apologize to the fans, my family.” — Tucker.
