Amherst’s Kuncel wins 20-24 age group at Cleveland Triathlon

CLEVELAND — Adam Kuncel of Amherst has been a football player, a track athlete and a BMX racer.
Sunday morning he found himself standing in the middle of downtown Cleveland as the  best triathlete in his age group in this year’s Cleveland Triathlon.
Kuncel, 24, had the fastest time in the 20-24 age group and was 14th overall in the men’s Olympic Distance event, finishing in 2:14:59.
He was the top Lorain County performer in the event that attracted some 700 athletes.
“I bettered my time by
10 minutes from last year,” said Kuncel, a 2001 Amherst Steele  graduate and a student at Lorain County Community College.
“In high school I played football, ran the 400 meters and long-jumped for the track team. I started out (after high school) BMX racing and mountain-bike racing. Now I do triathlons, biathlons and running races.
“I’m doing about 30 races a year. I keep busy. It’s a full-time job with the training. I used to be 220 pounds in high school. Now, I weigh 182 pounds
(6 feet tall).”
Jared Woodford of North Royalton won the Olympic Distance event with a time of 1:58:31. The 24-year-old Woodford finished more than two minutes ahead of second-place Ryan Bates of Copley (2:00:46).
Julianna Batizy-Morley, 36, of Centennial, Colo., was the class of the women’s field. The Akron native had a time of 2:13:42, easily defeating defending champ Jacqui Wilson, 40, of Cleveland Heights (2:21:58).
