Elyria softball at regionals: Big Leaguers bow out; Juniors split

WYOMING, Mich. — The ride came to an end for Elyria’s all-stars on Monday after manager Chris Sito’s team dropped a 4-2 decision to the Wisconsin District 13 team at the Big League regional tournament.
Elyria finished the six-team round-robin tournament with a 2-3 record. Wisconsin went 5-0 and will face the Michigan District 9 team in a best-of-three playoff to determine this year’s representative at the World Series for girls ages 16-18.
After Wisconsin scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, Brianna Wade cracked an 0-2 pitch over the center-field fence to lead off the top of the second for Elyria’s first run.
Alesha Mahone singled, with Kristen Fyffe coming in to pinch run for Mahone.
Erin Sunagel singled, putting runners on first and second, before a passed ball moved the runners up to second and third.
After a strikeout, Brenda Taranto grounded out to the Wisconsin shortstop, with Fyffe trotting home with the second run. Another strikeout put an end to Elyria’s rally.
Wisconsin scored twice in the bottom of the second to regain the lead at 3-2.
Elyria threatened again in the fourth inning, getting runners on second and third with nobody out, but failed to score. Wisconsin added an insurance run in the fifth as the Elyrians couldn’t mount any threats after the fourth inning.
“This was another good tournament ride for our girls,” Chris Sito said. “We played extremely well and were in most of our games.”
Fyffe and Mahone were the only girls on this year’s team who played on last year’s Elyria team that advanced to the World Series.
It was the last Little League game for Kristin Sito, who is headed to Niagara (N.Y.) University to continue her education and softball career.
