District to give parents a forum

LORAIN — After weeks of walking away angry and frustrated from several recent school board meetings, parents of students who attend Lorain Schools will have a forum to address their concerns.

Back-to-school meetings, Aug. 15:

• Elementary schools: 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
• Middle schools: 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
• High schools: 11 a.m.,
3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

For the first time, a community back-to-school meeting will take place at each building throughout the day Aug. 15.

Principals, supervisors and some teachers will be on hand to speak with parents.

“I want to give the parents an opportunity to ask questions and feel like they’re a part of this system,” said Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson, who created the event. “That’s what’s most important to me.”

Atkinson said she received so many complaints that the school board and school personnel were not communicating with parents that she decided to implement a forum where discussion could take place.

“Communication is the most important thing,” she said.

Each building will conduct the meetings at three different times throughout the day to accommodate parent schedules.
