Train crushes family’s car

EATON TOWNSHIP — A woman and her children lost the family car Monday night, but they still have their lives after escaping from the vehicle before train hit the car, causing it to burst into flames.

There were seconds to spare before the heavy freight train smacked into the side of the vehicle around 9: 30 p.m., pushing it several hundred feet from the crossing on Avon-Belden Road near the Lorain and Grafton correctional institutions, Eaton Township firefighters said.

The force of the impact pushed the car’s trunk into the back seat and caused the vehicle’s gas tank to catch fire.
The woman, shaken, but otherwise okay, waited for help to arrive, firefighters said.

While being treated at the scene by the woman had a smile on her face, but declined to comment.
Firefighters said the vehicle stalled on the tracks just prior to being hit.

The woman, they said, grabbed her kids and run when the lights began to flash, the warning bars lowered and the train came into view.
