Richard K. Miles, Sr.

Richard K. Miles, Sr., 89, of Elyria died Saturday, August 18, 2007 at The Abbewood in Elyria.

He was born September 4, 1917 in Cleveland and graduated from West High School in 1935. He also attended Dyke School of Commerce and Fenn College.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 and was based at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941. He participated in assault landings on Makin Atoll and Okinawa. He was discharged with the rank of Warrant Officer.

He returned after the war and joined Rock Island Lumber Company in Cleveland as a salesman in home building materials. From 1947 to 1952 he was the Manager at Weiler-Wilhelm Lumber Company in Cleveland. He moved to Elyria to manage Temple Lumber Co. from 1952 to 1958. From 1960 to 1970 he was the general contractor for the FHA Renovation of 2000 homes in Lorain County. He received his real estate license in 1971. From 1973 to 1987 he was field operations manager for American Handling Equipment Company of Cleveland.

He was a member and former Trustee of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Elyria. He was a 54 year member and past president of Elyria Kiwanis Club. He was a member of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

He and his wife had traveled to 22 countries throughout the world.

He is survived by a son, Richard K. Miles, Jr. of Bakersfield, CA; daughters, Mary C. and Betsy A. Miles both of Elyria; and two grandsons.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Betty Jane Miles (nee Schenk) in 1992; his parents, Albert and Marie Miles; and a brother, George L. Miles.

A Memorial Service will be Saturday, September 8, 2007, 11 a.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 330 Second St., Elyria. Rev. Christina Kukuk will officiate. Inurnment will be in Lakewood Park Cemetery, Rocky River.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests performing a community service with a civic organization or a memorial contribution to the charity of your choice. Dicken Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elyria, is in charge of arrangements.
