Michael G. Spencer, 33, of Lorain, died Friday, August 24, 2007 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was born May 12, 1974 in Elyria and was a resident of Lorain for the past 32 years.
He was a 1992 graduate of Open Door Christian Academy in Elyria. The same year, the school established the Michael G. Spencer Personal Achievement Award presented annually to a deserving senior upon graduation. Following his graduation, Michael returned to Open Door and volunteered as a tutor of History, Science, and English working with Mr. Larry Russ.
Michael was the State of Ohio Poster Child for the Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. in 1981 and Northeast OHIO M.D.A. Poster Child in 1982 making many television appearances and involved in several community projects to help raise funds for the association. On March 25, 1992, Michael received the Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. Personal Achievement Award created to recognize outstanding or noteworthy achievements by Americans with any of the 40 neuromuscular diseases. Michael served as an inspiration to people with disabilities because of his positive approach to daily life. Then Cleveland Mayor, Michael R. White proclaimed that day as Michael Spencer Day in Cleveland. Nine days later, Lorain Mayor, Alex Olejko proclaimed Michael Spencer Day in Lorain. He enjoyed a variety of special activities with the Lorain Fire Dept. and local businesses.
Despite his disabilities, Michael led a full life. He has acted in several school and church plays, performed as a “sit-down” comedian, sang songs at Tower Baptist Church, and has traveled extensively, including trips to Europe, out West, and up and down the East Coast. Michael enjoyed reading, basketball, football, history, science, and loved animals.
He was an honorary member of the Elyria Police Dept. and the Lorain Fire Dept. as well as the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club.
Survivors include his parents, Alva and Gladys (nee Lowe) Spencer of Lorain; pets, “Red” a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and “Bandit” a Pug; dear friends and spiritual encouragers, Mr. Larry Russ of Elyria and Mr. Stephen Yates of PA; along with a host of relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William and Sarah Lowe of Fayetteville, NC, and George and Eula Spencer of Lorain.
Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 8 P.M. in Tower Baptist Church, 1331 Tower Blvd., Lorain. Services will be Wednesday at 11 A.M. in the church with Rev. Terry Brooks, Pastor presiding. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Twp.
