Would-be phone pole thief flees police

LORAIN — A brazen thief did not get away with whatever he was hoping to find atop a telephone pole on Broadway

The looter was caught in the act around 11:40 a.m. Monday by an Ohio Edison employee who told police he saw a man on a telephone pole behind the old Gel-Pak in the 1200 block of Broadway with a hacksaw in his hands, the police report said. The male was sawing phone lines and the pole in an attempt to take it down.

The man told the electric company employee he needed gas money before jumping from the pole and taking off.

When police got there, they realized the telephone line was severed and on the ground. The steel pole the phone line was attached to was partially sawed, the report said.

Police have a good idea who the thief is as the investigating officer has had several dealings with him in the past for stealing scrap metal. CenturyTel said the severed line did not affect any customers.
