ELYRIA — A group of Elyria teens found out firsthand why you shouldn’t play with guns.
About six of them, ages 15 to 18, were watching television about 6:40 p.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of West Avenue when one of them pulled out a loaded handgun and began twirling it on a coffee table, police said. Parents of the 16-year-old who invited the teens over did not appear to be home at the time.
The gun went off, and a bullet went through the hand of 18-year-old Dashawn Martin, an Oberlin resident.
Several of the teens fled the home, including the one who allegedly pulled out the gun, police said. Martin and the 16-year-old resident told police they did not know the teen who brought the gun.
Martin was treated and released from EMH Regional Medical Center.
