Virginia Fletcher Smith

Virginia Fletcher Smith (nee Smith), 87, formerly of Amherst, and a resident of Dover, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at New Dawn Retirement Community in Dover. She was born December 18, 1919 in Copenhagen, NY where she was raised. She lived for 60 years in Carthage, NY before moving to Amherst in 1999. She has been a resident of Dover, since 2002.
Virginia and her late husband owned and operated the Fletcher’s Liquore Store in Carthage, NY for 30 years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Carthage, NY.
Survivors include her sons, James M. Fletcher of Dover and John J. Fletcher of Elyria;  daughter, Lillian G. Hamilton of Amherst; 16 grandchildren; and thirty-five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband of 32 years, Maurice J. Fletcher in 1970; second husband of nine years, Herman Smith in 1983; daughters, Mary M. Conner in 2007 and Cynthia A. LaPlatney in 2001; son, William G. Robbins; one grandson; two great-grandsons; parents, Asman L. and Lillian A. Smith (nee Rice); brothers, Leslie and Kenneth Smith; and sisters, Elizamae Jones and Thelma Ely.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 11 A.M. from St. Paul Lutheran Church, 115 Central Dr., Amherst. The Rev. Terrance Adamson will officiate.
Final arrangements are being handled by the Hempel Funeral Home in Amherst.
