Akron mayor faces Democratic challenger today

AKRON (AP) — Akron’s longtime mayor is touting his leadership experience as he faces his first Democratic primary opponent in 20 years.

The challenger, city councilman Joe Finley, has said that under Mayor Don Plusquellic (pluhs-KWEHL’-ihk), people have been moving out of Akron instead of the city moving in the right direction.

Polls are open until 7:30 p.m.

The winner of the primary will have a lock on the mayor’s office, because no Republican is running in November.

During their sole debate last month, Plusquellic and Finley clashed over topics including a foreclosure problem in Akron. The mayor said educating home buyers is key. The challenger said the city should do more to keep people from winding up with mortgages they can’t afford.
