Akron mayor defeats Democratic challenger in primary race

AKRON — Mayor Don Plusquellic, facing his first Democratic primary opponent in 20 years, won the party’s nomination for another term in office Tuesday night.

With all 153 precincts reporting unofficial results, Plusquellic had 9,765 votes, or 53 percent, to City Councilman Joe Finley’s 8,732 votes, or 47 percent.

The victory sets up Plusquellic for a sixth four-year term as mayor because no Republican is running in November.

During their sole debate last month, Plusquellic and Finley clashed over topics including a foreclosure problem in Akron.

Plusquellic, 57, said educating home buyers is key. Finley said the city should do more to keep people from winding up with mortgages they can’t afford.
