ELYRIA — An Elyria boy was charged with cruelty to animals Sunday after shooting his mother’s dog in the leg with a BB gun, an Elyria police report said.

The 15-year-old boy’s mother called police to her Oberlin Road apartment at about 5 p.m., shortly after the dog was shot. The mother said that her son had been in the yard shooting at targets in the parking lot when her poodle walked into the area, the report said.

An 8-year-old girl in the area told police that the boy was with a group of friends when she heard him say, “Watch this, I’m gonna shoot the dog,” the report said. The boy fired a shot at the dog and struck it in its paw.

The report said the dog couldn’t walk and was whimpering while licking its paw. The boy’s mother said the boy has been unruly and skipping school, the report said.
