ELYRIA — County Common Pleas Judge Mark Betleski’s string of bad luck took a painful turn Thursday morning when he crashed his motorcycle and broke his ankle while on his way to work.
Already this year Betleski has had his home robbed — the thieves made off with his liquor, loose change and some jewelry — and injured his back while moving furniture.
Betleski was turning onto East Fourth Street from East River Street on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when the crash happened, said his bailiff, Dave Rakich.
“When he was turning, he lost control,” Rakich said.
Betleski was wearing a helmet, but his foot got caught under the motorcycle when he fell, Rakich said.
The judge was cited for failure to control before he was taken to EMH Regional Medical Center where a plate was screwed onto his ankle during surgery Thursday afternoon.
Betleski was in “good spirits,” when Rakich visited him at the hospital.
“He was kidding around about it,” he said.
Betleski is expected to be released from the hospital today, but it was unclear when he would return to work.
A police report on the crash was not available Thursday.
