AVON LAKE — For about 50 Avon Lake senior citizens, the schedule is full on the third Wednesday of every month. That’s because they have a standing engagement of a meal shared with friends and entertainment.
The Lively Avon Lakers was started in 1992 by Betty Wakefield and Rosetta Baldwin, said Betty Gates, the group’s unofficial program director.

“They found that there wasn’t much for seniors to do in Avon Lake, so the Lively Avon Lakers were born,” she said.
The group started off with just 10 members.
“A few years ago, we had over a hundred,” Gates said. “It has since declined, but we’re still going strong.”
The Lively Avon Lakers sponsor a monthly luncheon at The Legacy Restaurant, on the grounds of Sweetbriar Golf Course on Jaycox Road.
“The Legacy has been very generous, and the service is absolutely wonderful,” Gates said.
Mary Grace Zarenko, a longtime member, said the luncheons used to be held at the Avon Lake Public Library.
“We couldn’t hold them there anymore because the group had grown so large,” she said.
Joan Richards, one of the group’s original members, said the luncheon costs $8 per person and includes a main dish, salad and bread, as well as entertainment. Arrangements for the food need to be made ahead of time, so reservations are a must.
Why join the Lively Avon Lakers?
“For the friendships,” Richards said. “And, of course, it’s nice to get out for lunch, have great entertainment and meet new people.”
The group publishes a monthly newsletter that is mailed out by Gates. “Betty certainly has a lot of mailing to do!” said Richards, laughing.
Dues are just $5 per year, payable in January. There also are door prizes at each event.
And here’s the thing — the name is a bit of a misnomer. You don’t need to live in Avon Lake to become a member.
