Elyria hopes for rerun … another win on TV

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Brunswick (5-0) at Elyria (1-4)

WHEN: Tonight, 7 o’clock
TV/RADIO:
FSN Ohio; WEOL 930-AM; WDLW 1380-AM
LAST YEAR: Brunswick, 35-34
THE SKINNY: It’s TV time for the Pioneers again. Last year, during FSN Ohio’s first season of televised high school football games, the Pioneers defeated North Royalton.
Tonight is Take 2, but the opponent is the undefeated Brunswick Blue Devils this time. It hasn’t been an easy first half of the season for the Pioneers and it certainly isn’t about to get any easier. Elyria now enters the teeth of its schedule — and it’s a heck of a way to open play in the Valley Division in the newly formed Northeast Ohio Conference.
Brunswick not only comes in 5-0, but also ranked fifth in the latest Division I state poll. Last week, the Blue Devils won a wild league crossover game against Normandy, 42-35.
Brunswick totaled 516 yards of offense, much of itcoming from the arm of the Blue Devils’ prolific senior quarterback, Sean Bedevelsky, who completed 22 of 28 passes for 328 yards and three touchdowns to Jordan Gribble. The senior wide receiver caught 12 passes for 228 yards, and he also intercepted a pass at defensive back.
The struggles of the Pioneers begin on defense. Elyria’s allowed 37.6 points per game over its last three weeks. Opponents have run the ball at will, averaging 292 yards per game on the season.
Last week the Pioneers were undermined by a flurry of turnovers and ill-timed penalties. Worse, they couldn’t stop Parma’s rushing attack, which totaled a staggering 346 yards. To stay with Brunswick, Elyria’s going to have to slow down that vaunted offense.
