The Lorain County General Health District's Vital Statistics Office houses the birth and death records beginning in 1908 to the present. Certificates of births and deaths occurring in all of Lorain County, except for the city of Lorain, are available at the health district.

Janice M. Schlechter (nee Simms), 65, of Elyria, died Saturday, September 22, 2007 at her home following a long illness. She was born July 5, 1942 in Elyria and was a resident of Lorain County for most of her life.
She was a 1960 LaGrange High School graduate and attended Lorain County Community College.
Mrs. Schlechter was an office secretary for the Lorain Soil and Water Conservation District for 16 years. She retired in 2002.
Mrs. Schlechter also worked as a program assistant with the Lorain County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, she worked part time at the Lorain County Board of Mental Retardation, and was also a secretary at Whitehouse Artesian Springs in Elyria.
She was a member of Park Ave. United Methodist Church in Amherst and also attended Zion United Methodist Church in Elyria.
She enjoyed working on their family farm, gardening and reading.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Robert; a son, Greg (wife Karen) of Akron; sisters, Lois Wolfe of Birmingham, and Virginia Gleisner of Watertown, NY.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Jean Lescher, Dolores Ballentyne; and brothers, Donald Simms and Karl Simms, Jr.; and her parents, Karl and Caroline (nee Kolb) Simms.
There will be a Memorial Service at 11 A.M. Saturday, September 29, 2007 at LaGrange United Methodist Church, 105 West Main St., LaGrange. Rev. Dick Kerchmar will officiate.
