Elyria’s Alex Treuel wins LCAAA golf tournament

AVON — It’s been a very good year so far for Alex Treuel of Elyria.
Next Wednesday, at Thunderbird Hills North in Huron, he’s primed to make it even better. That’s where the Division I sectional golf tournament will be held in the first step toward next month’s state tournament in Columbus.
On Saturday, Treuel tuned up with an impressive par round 71 for medalist honors in the prestigious Lorain County Athletic Administrators Association Tournament at Bob-O-Link, topping the best local golfers of all divisions.
The LCAAA the only tournament that allows all area golfers to compete on one course.
In team play, Midview shot a sizzling 299 to unseat defending champion Avon Lake, as all five Middies shot in the 70s on the Red and White nines. Avon Lake and Elyria tied for runnerup at 303, a score usually good enough to win in major tournaments. Amherst (306) and Elyria Catholic (312) rounded out the top five.
Treuel edged Ian Suszka of Vermilion and Matt Schneider of Amherst, who each shot 72, and Bryan Yeo of Keystone and Matt Gregory of Firelands, who each shot 73.
It was Treuel’s sixth victory in eight 18-hole tournaments this fall as he has been consistently the best area prep golfer. Last year, in the LCAAA tourney, he also was medalist at 72, but lost the trophy on the fifth hole of a playoff.
He shot a 70 in the sectional in 2006 to qualify for the district but failed in the second round to advance to state.
“I hit my driver really well today, and that has me excited about going to the sectional,” Treuel said. “It was pretty cold this morning and it took me a while to get warmed up.”
Treuel started in the shotgun tee off on the Red layout’s ninth hole and by the time he got back to the Red first hole he was hot, parring seven holes in a row.
“I had three birdies and three bogeys, the rest all pars,” said Treuel. “I sank a 25-footer for bird on the White ninth and five footers on the seventh at White and eighth on Red.”
The team story was all Midview. The Middies had 74s by Jay Overy and Louis Elbert, 75 by Brad Weaver, 76 by Jared Linden and 77 by Ryan Dale. Only the low four scores count for the team total, so it is very unusual for a 77 not counting in any tournament. Seven teams didn’t have a single player with that low a score.
“Everybody put it together today,” said Midview coach Randy Camp of his team’s lowest score this season. “But there were no surprises. All these guys are capable of good scores.”
If Midview can repeat that kind of shooting in the sectional at Thunderbird Hills, the Middies will almost surely advance to the district — with a shot at qualifying for state. But Camp is making no predictions.
“There are a lot of unknowns in the sectional because we’ll be going against teams we’ve never played before,” he said.
“This was definitely the best we’ve shot as a team this year,” said Midview’s usual number-one golfer Jay Overy. “Our previous low was 305. I started out rough today with five bogeys on the front nine. But I settled down and rallied, getting birdies on my last two holes. I had three birdies for the round, on the White ninth and eight and nine on the Red. Overall, I drove pretty well today, but I didn’t chip or putt very well.”
After a chilly start, the weather warmed up, and it turned out to be a perfect day for golf under sunny skies and little wind as evident by 26 golfers breaking 80.
